“Twelve levels,” said MC. “Eight rooms on each level. We have a lot of rooms to explore. Any suggestions on how we should get this done?”

“Just like in the movies,” said Wanda. “This is where someone says we should split up, and the audience is yelling don’t do it.”

“And definitely don’t go in the basement,” added Karen. “They’ve been making movies like that since I was a kid too.”

“I’m in favor of letting MC handle this part,” said Gentry.

MC would have said it if Gentry hadn’t. He didn’t consider himself a Rambo kind of guy, but he was the only one with the training.

“If you don’t mind, ladies, I think we should stay together at least until we find the armory, but unless someone has somewhere else they have to be, I think we can take our time and stay together. Besides, if I understood Mr. Rush correctly, it’s not too likely that we’ll run into anyone down here.”

“I don’t trust him,” said Wanda.

MC wasn’t much older than Wanda or Gentry, but he couldn’t help feeling more worldly. Wanda acted like she had grown up in a small town and had never left even for nursing school. He gave her a sideways glance and a grin when she said she didn’t trust Titus Rush. After all, he had given them something pretty big…a chance to survive.

Karen saw the grin too. “She’s young, and she thinks all men over sixty are creepy, but I have a feeling she’ll think of the old guy differently after we do some exploring.”

Wanda had shaken her head at the comment, but only a few minutes later, Karen was proven to be right. As she put it, “This ain’t your grandfather’s shelter.”

Titus said twelve levels and eight rooms, so they decided to go to the top level and work their way down. He also said in the video that the layouts were on the computer, so they spent a few minutes finding out exactly where they were in the shelter. MC particularly wanted to see how far they were from the top of the shelter, and despite assurances from the old man in the video, he wanted to see for himself just how safe they were.

The shelter map wasn’t hard to find on the computer, and even though it appeared to be quite an accomplishment, it was something you had to see with your own eyes in order to fully appreciate it.

There were elevators and stairs, and despite the fact they were impressed with what they had seen so far, none of them had the urge to be enclosed in an elevator when the unknown was on the other side of the door. MC made the point that when the door opened, they would have nowhere to go if there were infected dead on the other side. The reality of that situation was even more frightening than a power failure while they were using the elevator.
